{"id":274,"date":"2019-05-29T14:01:07","date_gmt":"2019-05-29T18:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/salineparents.org\/?page_id=274"},"modified":"2019-05-29T14:01:07","modified_gmt":"2019-05-29T18:01:07","slug":"george-examples-of-gender-stereotyping","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/salineparents.org\/?page_id=274","title":{"rendered":"George-Examples of Gender Stereotyping"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Typical Boys are portrayed as dirty &amp; Do not care about hygiene or\nschool.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott first introduced thumping around the house and \u201cunzipping\nhis jeans before he reached the toilet.\u201d Pg. 6<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott refuses to wash up before dinner, asks Mom \u201cWhat makes\nyou think I\u2019m dirty?\u201d \u201cBecause I\u2019ve met you.&nbsp;\nYou\u2019re always dirty.&nbsp; Now go wash\nyour hands with soap.\u201d&nbsp; pg. 74 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boys don\u2019t care about school:&nbsp;\n\u201cScott rarely showed such enthusiasm about his education.\u201d&nbsp; pg. 74&nbsp;&nbsp;\nThe one event of his day that he is excited about is describing in great\ndetail a kid who threw up at gym. Pg. 75&nbsp;\n\u201cso I got to see the vomit up close.&nbsp;\nSome of the macaroni pieces were still whole.&nbsp; I think it was mac\u2019n\u2019 cheese because it was\nall yellow-\u201c pg. 75<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Scott refuses to brush teeth or wash up before ready\nfor school: \u201cYou\u2019re disgusting,\u201d said Mom&nbsp;\n\u201cI\u2019m a teenage boy,\u201d said Scott.&nbsp;\n\u201cWhat do you expect?\u201d pg. 83<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Boys use crude language <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cSorry\nif I busted in on you while you were taking a dump.\u201d pg. 8 (Scott)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2019Ahh\u2019, he said when he sauntered back down the stairs.&nbsp; No wonder they call if relieving\nyourself.&nbsp; That was a good one.\u201d&nbsp; pg. 172 (Scott to George and Mom)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Boys are Disrespectful to Girls Bodies:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly says she never wears skirts to school because \u201cboys are\ndirty and try to look up them.\u201d Pg. 181<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Boys Are Violence Loving and Admire Graphic Violence <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Blood of Evil,\u201d is a German film Scott is excited to\nwatch. &nbsp;\u201cThe zombies gnaw this one guy\u2019s\narm off and kill him, the other guy had to use the gnawed off arm of his dead\nbest friend to fight the zombies.&nbsp; It\u2019s\nawesome!\u201d pg. 9<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>George throws his fork and Scott admires his throw telling\nGeorge he\u2019d be good in a fight pg.77<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott encourages George to play a shooter video game with\nhim.&nbsp; George tries it and decides to\nleave Scott&nbsp; \u201cto kill everything in\nsight.\u201d&nbsp; pg.102<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Words \u201cMan \/ Boy \/ Young Man \/ Mr.\u201d&nbsp;\nPortrayed as Negative and Offensive:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teacher (Ms Udell) tells George he has compassion &amp;\nimagination for crying over Charlotte\u2019s death, and he will turn into a fine\nyoung man. &nbsp;\u201cThe word man hit like a pile\nof rocks falling on George\u2019s skull.&nbsp; It\nwas a hundred times worse than boy, and she couldn\u2019t breathe.&nbsp; She bit her lip fiercely and felt fresh tears\npounding against her eyes\u2026. She wished she were invisible.\u201d pg. 16<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly\u2019s Dad calls George Mr. Mitchell.&nbsp; \u201cGeorge hated being called Mr. Mitchell.&nbsp; She wanted to shout, <em>Mr. Mitchell lives in Poconos with a woman named Fiona!<\/em>&nbsp; Mr Mitchell was her Dad\u2019s name.&nbsp; It would be her brother Scott\u2019s name someday\ntoo, but it would never be hers .\u201d pg.38<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Becoming a Man (puberty) is Portrayed as a Scary Change:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2026she almost looked like a girl.&nbsp; For now, anyway. &nbsp;Today her skin was smooth, but someday\ntestosterone would grow a terrible beard all over her face.&nbsp; Scott had already started to sprout awkward\ntufts under his chin.\u201d pg.127<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Boy\u2019s Bathrooms are portrayed, as dirty, frightening places were boys\nrelish in talking about their genitals.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cGeorge\nhated the boy\u2019s bathroom.&nbsp; It was the\nworst room in the school.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He\nhates the Smell of pee &amp; bleach, hates blue tiles on the wall, dislikes\nseeing the urinals<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe whole room was about being a boy, and when boys were in\nthere, they liked to talk about what was between their legs.\u201d pgs. 16-17<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Adult Males Portrayed as Poor Father Figures:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cWhen\nGeorge referred to her family, Mom and Scott were usually who she meant.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDad made a better\npart-time father.\u201d&nbsp; pg. 26<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly\u2019s dad is somewhat neglectful \u2013juxtaposes the chaos of\nhis apartment vs. the peace of Kelly\u2019s room.&nbsp;\nPg. 31&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; No real dishes in his apartment, Kelly jokes\nabout it being a pigsty. pgs. 38-39&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly\u2019s Dad is immersed\nin his work and out of touch.&nbsp; \u201cKelly\nyour Dad is weird.\u201d (George) pg. 61<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sensory Noises and Smells of Boys (negative) vs. Girls (positive) <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott is constantly banging on doors, thumping on the stairs,\nslamming doors, throwing his bike down in a clatter.&nbsp; Rude, disruptive noises are associated with\nboys.&nbsp; Pgs 6-7, pg 74, pg 172<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Pleasant\nsmells &amp; images are associated with girls.&nbsp;\nKelly smells like oranges &amp; pencil shavings. pg.20<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Kelly\u2019s\nroom smells like lemons, spotless, stylish, clean (vacuum lines) pg. 31<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Principal\nMaldonado smells of vanilla. pg. 161<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Girls Stereotyped into Being Interested in Make-Up, Boys, Hair, Clothes,\nGossiping <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magazine covers titled:&nbsp;\n\u201cperfect skin, Twelve fresh summer haircuts, tell a hottie you like him,\nwilder winter wardrobes\u201d&nbsp; pgs. 2-3 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The models in the magazines are considered\nGeorge\u2019s girl friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>George imagines what a safe space for LGBT kids would be\nlike.&nbsp; What he says he\u2019s looking forward\nto is talking about make-up together and maybe trying some on. p.125<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For\nGeorge being a girl means trying on make-up and girl clothes with a friend&nbsp; pgs. 183-185<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Both George and Scott suggest if you\ndo not feel good about your gender or fit into the stereotypical gender roles\ngiven in the book, you might be born in the wrong body.&nbsp; \u201cNo offense, but you don\u2019t make a very good\nboy.\u201d&nbsp; (Scott)&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cI know.\u201d&nbsp;\n(George)&nbsp; pg.141<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>George Examples of <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inappropriate Sexual Content <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Looking at Pornography is Casually Mentioned Several Times as a Normal\nThing That Kids Do: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my little bro!&nbsp;\nGrowing up and looking at dirty magazines.\u201d&nbsp; Pg. 8-9&nbsp;\n(Scott expressing his belief that George\u2019s magazines were pornographic\nand approving of his brother.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe girls in the magazines she was looking at wore a lot\nmore clothes than that, even the ones at the beach.\u201d&nbsp; Pg 8-9&nbsp;&nbsp;\n(George knows what kind of dirty magazines Scott is talking about) &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott discovers George\u2019s bag of girl magazines:&nbsp; \u201cDude, I thought you had porn or something in\nthere, so I took a peek.&nbsp; You know, just\nto find out what kind of stuff my little bro was into.\u201d&nbsp; Pg 141<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>George Expresses Fear\/Sadness at Her Body<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe immersed her body in the warm water and tried not to\nthink about what was between her legs, but there it was, bobbing in front of\nher.\u201d&nbsp; Pg. 44<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Introduces Kids to the Idea of Taking Hormones to Stop Puberty and Sex\nReassignment Surgery as Options<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>George States as a Fact that You Can Change Your Gender <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGeorge had seen an interview on\ntelevision a few months ago with a beautiful woman named Tina.&nbsp; She had golden-brown skin, thick hair with\nblond highlights, and long sparkling fingernails.&nbsp; The interviewer said Tina had been born a\nboy, then asked her whether she\u2019d had <em>the\nsurgery<\/em>.&nbsp; The woman replied that she\nwas a <em>transgender woman<\/em> and that what\nshe had between her legs was nobody\u2019s business but her and her\nboyfriend\u2019s.\u201d&nbsp; pg. 46<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo George knew it could be\ndone.&nbsp; A boy could become a girl.&nbsp; She had since read on the internet that you\ncould take girl hormones that would change your body, and you could get a bunch\nof different surgeries if you wanted them and had the money.&nbsp; This was called <em>transitioning<\/em>.&nbsp; You could\neven start before you were eighteen with pills called androgen blockers that stopped\nthe boy hormones already inside you from turning your body into a man\u2019s.&nbsp; But for that, you needed your parent\u2019s\npermission. \u201d pg. 47<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott asks George if he wants to go\n\u201call the way\u201d with gender reassignment surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo, like, do you want to\u201d \u2013he made a\ngesture with two fingers like a pair of scissors \u2013\u201cgo all the way?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>George squeezed her legs\ntogether.&nbsp; \u201cMaybe someday,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelly asks if George wants to take\nhormones so \u201cyour body, you know, doesn\u2019t go all manlike?\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suggests a good parent would approve\nof taking hormones:&nbsp; \u201cYour mom\u2019s pretty\ncool, maybe she\u2019d be ok with it.\u201d (Kelly) pgs. 104-105<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Any less than complete\nacceptance of George being a girl is not enough.&nbsp;
